Sculpture in Portland, Oregon.
About the sculptor, Russel
Peltzer created his first piece of sculptor at the age of seven. The same
year he fell in love with the creative process and the beauty of the human
form. He started playing the guitar at 13 years old and by the time he was
17 had become a notable professional musician and was making more money
than his father who was an engineer. That same year he astounded his metal
shop teacher with his incredible ability to work the metal with his hands.
The teacher soon had Russel working on his own pet projects. When he was
twenty-one and a student at the University of Southern Colorado, he began
the study of the ballet and fell in love with dance and with the beauty of
the human form in motion. Russel began the study of Chiropractic at Western
States Chiropractic College in 1973. The first week of study found him in
the dissection laboratory, unmasking the mysteries of human machine. Years
later while studying the writings of Leonardo di Vinci, he gained an even
more profound appreciation of what he had learned through the dissection
and study of the layers of the muscles, his first hand experience of the
bones and all of the workings of the body. While in Mexico in 1982 he had
the great fortune to meet and befriend the internationally famous Mexican
sculptor Gabriel Ponzanelli. Gabriel was the 32nd generation of Italian
sculptors, the first one in his family of sculptors being a fellow student
with Michaelangelo. Russel made countless trips to Mexico, living in
Gabriel's studio for weeks at a time while watching the master at work. For
more than twenty years he learned from Gabriel Ponzanelli. Finally the
master told Russel that he would not teach him to sculpt because Russel had
far too much talent of his own and that the clay alone would teach him. He
said "if I teach you, you will only be a copy of me. I want you to be my
greatest competition", This piece of sculpture represent years of work,
countless hours of study and the great love that a master sculptor had for
his favorite student .
The work was completed in the fall of 2002. She is 34 inches in
height, produced in bronze with the lost wax process at the "Burning Palace
Bronze" foundry in Boring, Oregon. Finished with cobalt blue petina and wax
polished to perfection. Tracy Taylor modeled for the work. Tracy is the
prima ballerina for the Oregon Ballet Theater in Portland Oregon. The base
is made of highly polished black granite one and one quarter inch thick.
Good Luck.
